From 24 to 27 June 2027, Defqon.1 returns to the Holy Grounds in Biddinghuizen. Four days, outdoors, with camping. That is a fundamentally different job from a night in a venue: you are not packing an outfit, you are packing a list.

And this year there is an extra reason to think it through. The 2026 edition was cut short because of extreme heat, during the first ever code-red heat warning issued by the Dutch weather institute KNMI. "Dress for the weather" is no longer just a saying. Below you will find how to prepare for all of it: for thirty degrees, for rain, and for four days without a washing machine.

The short version

• Count on one outfit per day plus a spare. Four days, no washing machine.
• Choose breathable fabric for daytime. Acetate looks superb, but not in thirty degrees of sun.
• Always bring something warm. The gap between midday and night on the Holy Grounds is significant.
• Dark colours are more practical. Mud and grass do not forgive light-coloured trousers.
• Shoes that can take a beating. Not your best pair, but a broken-in pair.
• A cap and a hip bag are not luxuries. Sun, and hands free.

The packing list

Print it out or save it in your notes. This is what you need for four days, assuming you are camping.

Per day

• A shirt. Four of them plus a spare. T-shirts and soccer jerseys are the most practical here: they dry fast and you can change daily.
• Trousers and shorts. Two pairs of long track pants and two pairs of shorts is a good ratio. Short during the day, long in the evening.
• Clean socks. Bring more socks than you think you need. This is the item everyone regrets on the last day.
• Underwear. Same principle.

For the evening and the night

• A track jacket. Around your waist during the day, on in the evening. The single most-used item in your bag.
• A jacket or windbreaker. For when it really cools down or starts raining.
• Something to sleep in. Nights at the campsite get colder than you expect.

Shoes and accessories

• Two pairs of shoes. One pair to walk in, one spare for when the first pair gets soaked.
• A hip bag. Hands free, belongings with you, and it is not in anyone's way.
• A cap. Four days of sun on your head is no small thing.
• A flag. Not just for show: it is the easiest way to find your group again.

Heat: the lesson from 2026

Late June on open ground in Flevoland can mean anything. In 2026 it meant the festival was stopped because it simply became too hot and too dangerous. That is not a detail you skip when packing your bag.

What that means for your clothing in practice:

• Leave your acetate suit in the bag during the day. An acetate tracksuit barely breathes and holds heat. Superb for the evening or an indoor event, unsuitable for full sun.
• Cover your skin rather than burn it. A thin longsleeve or light track jacket protects you from the sun better than bare shoulders – and cools down faster.
• A cap is functional. Your head and neck catch the most sun.
• Change more often. Putting on a dry shirt halfway through the day makes more difference than you would think.

So save your best suit for the evening, when the temperature drops and the lights come on. That is when it looks its best anyway.

Rain and mud

The other extreme, and just as likely. A festival site walked on for four days turns to mud as soon as it rains. Two rules:

Dark over light. Light-coloured trousers will not survive day one. If you really want to wear your light suit, save it for a dry day.

Bring a second pair of shoes. Wet shoes do not dry at a campsite. A spare pair saves the rest of your weekend.

What it costs: three ways to approach it

Entry level

Four shirts from 100% Hardcore or Australian with shorts you already own. For a multi-day outdoor festival this is not the cheap option – it is often simply the smartest one.

Complete

A track jacket plus shirts and trousers for every day. At Defqon.1 the jacket is the item you put on and take off most often, so that is where the investment pays off.

Practical: four days on the Holy Grounds

You are packing for two climates. Sun and heat during the day, cold at night. Everything you bring has to be useful in one of those two situations, or you are carrying it for nothing.

Space is limited. Your bag has to get to the campsite and back again. Choose items you can wear more than once over items that only work for one moment.

There is no washing machine. Obvious, but it is the reason dark clothing is more practical at a campsite than light clothing, and why socks are the item everyone under-packs.

Getting there. Biddinghuizen is roughly an hour and a half from Amsterdam and within driving distance of the German border, which is where a large part of the crowd comes from every year. Plan your arrival and tent set-up so you are not doing it in the midday heat.

Seven mistakes you can spare yourself

• Too few socks. The most underrated item on the whole list.
• Only one pair of shoes. If it rains on day one, you spend three days in wet shoes.
• Your acetate suit during the day. Save it for the evening.
• Only dressing for daytime. Nights at the campsite get genuinely cold.
• Light colours. One downpour and that is that.
• Everything in your pockets. Jumping and full pockets do not mix. Bring a hip bag.
• Ordering in the final week. If it does not fit, there is no time left to exchange it.
